April 74

18. Captian Maxam, AC of crew 08, with 1LT Cerney at the throttles as co-pilot, experienced a bona fide engine failure at Sakhon Nakhon (Chaing Kihrua). At the time he was conducting a power check on #2 engine, while #1 engine was pulled back to under 100% NR. Sure enough, the suspect turbine chose that moment to give forth a startling Bang, followed closely by a sharp decrease in torque, high T5. Capt. Maxam lost no time in barking out the order for throttles full forward, and Lt Cerney wasted less in so doing. As the runway was directly below, there was not much deliberation over the issue of where to set down, and an expertly excuted single engine landing ended the drama.
