Colonel Curtis' Air Force Cross was awarded for his actions as an HH-43B helicopter pilot in the rescue of a downed pilot. Captured by the North Vietnamese 20 September 1965, Colonel Curtis was awarded the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, and four Bronze Stars for valor for his actions while a prisoner of war.
